What is the Citizen Police Academy?
The Webster Police Department's Citizen Police Academy educates citizens about the duties and responsibilities, as well as the policies and procedures, of the department, and the citizen's role in the interaction of citizens and police through a series of classes. In addition to helping the citizens better understand the police department, it in turn helps the police department better understand the citizens and their concerns.

What Topics are covered in the Academy?
The Citizen Police Academy covers many topics related to law enforcement in our community including: patrol division (basic police equipment, special response team, defense tactics, narcotics, DWI, laws) communications division (dispatching and records), criminal investigations division (fingerprints, crime scene investigation), gangs, domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, the K9 division, and fire arms training simulation. Participation in a "ride-along" program is also available where students can actually ride along with patrol officers to see the world through their eyes. These classes are instructed by police personnel. Notebooks with handouts on each subject are provided, and the students maintain them just as in an actual police academy. Students that graduate receive a diploma at a graduation dinner.

Where does the Academy meet?

The Citizen Police Academy meets once a week on Wednesday from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM for 12 weeks. Although there is no cost to the student, a substantial time commitment is required from the student. The Academy is held in the Webster Police Department's training facility.

Who may attend?

Anyone who lives or works in the City of Webster, is at least 21 years of age, and passes a background investigation may apply for the Citizen Police Academy.

How does one apply?

To apply for the Citizen Police Academy, an application can be obtained from the Webster Police Department or our website. Classes are kept small to insure interaction through discussions, as well as hands-on participation. Therefore, applications are on a first returned, first processed basis.

How has the community responded to the Citizen Police Academy?

Students of the Citizen Police Academy have responded very favorably. Graduates of the first class formed a Citizen Police Academy Alumni. They not only assist future CPA classes, but also participate with the Webster Police Officers Association as honorary members to help better our community with many favorable projects. The active alumni members participate in the City of Websters 4th of July celebration and host several other fundraising events throughout the year.
